COLOR WATCH: A PASSION FOR PASTELS!

There's just something about this pastel hued home that I'm really liking. I came across it in uber photographer Simon Watson's portfolio. When I usually think of pastels in home decor, I think of that shabby chic look or something too frou frou and frilly for me...well this home has changed my view on that!

Lavenders, blues and the palest of pinks in the living room. Then there is a soft sea foam green blue used in the dining room and den. Hmmm...these are definitely pastel colors but read as neutrals in my view.

Modern and sophisticated.  Not a lot of fuss.  Fuss-less is important here I think when using such potentially fussy colors.  Simplicity is key.

BELLE OF THE CONVERTED BALLROOMS!

Living room by Steven Gambrel with high coffered ceilings, a modern spikey chandelier, grey-lavender painted walls to created a panel effect, floor length curtains, grey sofas and matching armchairs, a leather ottoman has been turned into a coffee table and a greyish lavender area rug covered in squares.

Love this all in one room designed by Steven Gambrel. This city living room dining room combination is a renovated and remodeled ballroom.

Decorative molding and greyish lavender paint are combined to create a "panel" effect on the walls...these long rectangular panels act as a link between the high high ceilings and the rest of the room - a little design helping the architecture along!

I definitely like the dark black fireplace too.

And notice...more purple, lavender, lilac...hmmmm...purple is not my favorite color but for some reason this week I've been loving the way the lighter shades are used in design. Notice all of the lamps in different shades of purple!

SMART DESIGN: THE GREAT DIVIDE!

I like rooms...I like defined spaces...hence I'm not the biggest fan of a completely open floor plan. I like the idea dining in a dining room, living in a living room, reading in a library, doing work in a home office...not the biggest fan of doing everthing in one amorphous space (this aversion may be due to the fact that in my little house my living and dining are all in one...and I wish I had separate spaces).

Love this architectural solution pictured here...a floating dividing wall. In this flat (or...errrr...apartment...flat only crept in because of the Royal Wedding), the home owners have the best of both worlds...an open feeling floor plan with defined spaces. This dividing wall successfully separates the dining room from living room without making either space feel too closed in...a great solution for a small space perhaps. Plus, the wall gives residents the ability to hang more art!

What do you think? Do you like open floor plans? If so, why (I can be convinced to like them btw with a good argument)? If not, why not? Do you like this solution?
