Small bathroom with black and white cement tiles, arched paneled walls and a simple wash basin sink and arched mirror

Love this little bath designed by Jessica Helgerson.  The black and white cement tiles, the arched detail in the paneled walls, the simple wash basin sink, and the mirror!

I love the arched gold mirror above the bathroom sink. So elegant and simple.

This one inspired me to bring back CHEAP TO CHIC as I went in search of the perfect bathroom mirror.

P.S.  Had a great dinner last night with best of friend AT who is visiting from London...she brought along the very sweet VP who I worked with years ago.  We went to the Soho House.  Had such a great time.  Our evening ended up in a full blown photo shoot inside the photo booth on our way out.  The photo booth is there for people to take just a few photos with their friends to commemorate a night out.  We took about 30.  We couldn't quite get our pose right!

BLUE VELVET SOFA - CHEAP TO CHIC

living room blue velvet sofa pink side chair oval white coffee table modern home decor design

Great blue velvet sofas seem to be on trend these days.  I'm going to take out the word "seem" and just say these lovelies are definitely the "it" piece of furniture in home decor.  There.  I did it.  I made a definitive statement.  Wooo hoo!!! (TE and anyone I know can tell you...I deliberate about everything...so a definitive statement by me is a big deal!)

White, taupe, brown or gray - neutrals - sofas still are still of course the most popular. I am seeing this blue velvet trend quite a bit though and I like it.

Something so rich, royal and luxe about a beautiful blue sofa.  Definitely adds a bit of personality to a room too.  Can be either clean and modern or plush and traditional in style.  Perfect to add an easy high design touch to any living room, den or common space in a house or apartment.

So today I bring you blue velvet sofas in the first CHEAP TO CHIC in some time!

Barclay Butera Ridgecrest Loveseat - regular $3,640; on sale $2,199  (Velvet blue love seat with nailhead trim, turned wood legs on casters) (above)

West Elm Everett Upholstered Love Seat  - $899 (Ink blue performance velvet)(above)

Would you dare to be different with a blue velvet sofa?  What are the pros in cons in your mind?  Do you like this trend?

Happy Thursday!

P.S. Making all of my summer plans right now.  Have some fun summer launches of product to announce soon...and I hope to go to market to show some of them off!

P.P.S.  My mom leaves for France this Saturday!  She goes every year for two months.  Wish I could go to Paris with her!  I haven't been in two summers.  Must get back there soon.  I am taking her to the airport on Saturday and then stopping by a friend's new store!  More to come on that!

P.P.P.S. TE and I are also in the late throws of making our summer vacation plans...we'll see where we decide to go!

P.P.P.P.S. Had a great dinner with SR and LK at Katsuya two nights ago.  So great catching up with them.  So many fun stories to share!

P.P.P.P.P.S.  What are your summer plans?

CHEAP TO CHIC: MUSING OVER MALACHITE!

Malachite wallpaper in Kristi Bender's foyer with an organic circle table, parrot statues and two matching lamps with black shades

Love this foyer above. It was featured in Lonny Magazine a few months back. This entryway is in the home of my friend Kristi Bender of Wendy Schwartz Design. I've been to Kristi's house and seen this foyer. I fell in love with the green Cole & Sons Malachite wallpaper.  Malachite is a green banded stone...it has been quite "in" as inspiration in design for awhile now...but for some reason I'm seeing it pop up a lot this holiday season.

So today I bring you a CHEAP TO CHIC on all things malachite!

CHEAP TO CHIC: PASTORAL MURALS!

18th century Zuber wallpaper depicting a pastoral scene
1st Dibs - Zuber Wallpaper Panels - $9500 (18th century Zuber wallpaper on wood panels)(above)

I don't know why I like grisaille wall murals with bucolic country scenes but I do.

I would love to have a dining room or bedroom with one of these idyllic countryside landscapes rambling across the walls. I like the idea of art covering an entire wall!

Smash cut to reality - I live in a tiny cottage in the Hollwyood Hills...so small that there is probably only enough room to squeeze 1/2 of a tree from one of these wallpaper scenes.

I can still dream. :-) So today I bring you pastoral wall murals in the form of wallpaper and panels ... that's today's CHEAP TO CHIC!

dining room with black and white pastoral wallpaper, a crystal chandelier, round dark wood table with matching chairs and a dark wood floor

I like. What do you think? Too busy? Or are these wall murals just the right touch?

Happy Thursday!

P.S. Still without a computer...my sis DS is putting pressure on for me to return her Macbook Air. Dell people say they are coming by to fix my laptop next week. How long do you think I can keep my sis at bay?

P.P.S. Will do my market review next week when my computer is up and running. :-)

CHEAP TO CHIC: WHITE LIGHT - GLOWING GLASS TABLE LAMPS!

modern living room with white sofa, dueling armchairs, a zebra print upholstered ottoman with dark wood legs and a white gourd lamp
A white gourd lamp glows in the corner of a modern living room. (above)

I like a white table lamp and I especially love the glow of a white glass table lamp base.

White glass lamps are luminous and light yet opaque enough to feel substantive.  A staple item that can transcend decor styles and trends.  Contrast nicely against colored walls and blends seamlessly in white rooms.  Something to consider if thinking about adding a little light to your home.

Here's today's CHEAP TO CHIC!

Harriet lamp with white milk base

White Murano glass table lamp with white shade by Thomas Pheasant
Baker - Facet Table Lamp -  $2992.50 (White Murano glass table lamp with white shade by Thomas Pheasant)(above)

Do you like the idea of a white glass lamp? Could you use it in your home? If not, what kind of lamps do you like...ceramic, porcelain, metal? What lights you up?

Happy Monday!

Sea Grass Wingback Chair
Pottery Barn - Sea Grass Wingback Chair - $499 (above)
I like a good wingback chair.  I remember my first roommate out of college had one - RK was from Newport, RI and I think I recall her having a rather preppy wingback chair that she brought to our apartment in Boston.

Even the smallest of wingback chair is a little large for my tiny tiny cottage in the Hollywood Hills...but one day, I'll have room for a rather grand pair of wing chairs.

In today's CHEAP TO CHIC, I bring you the top 10 wing chairs out there today!

CHEAP TO CHIC: BLACK PENDANT LIGHTS! (take two)

Sleek modern kitchen with three black dome pendant lights hung over a black dining room table surrounded by upholstered chairs with higher back chairs at the head of the table.

I like this image above of the dining room with 3 large matte finish black dome pendant lights hung above the dining table. Caught my eye.

I like a nice black dome pendant lamp. Visually striking yet so basic at the same time. Eye catching indeed. (Oh btw...I've been using the word indeed a lot lately. Is that annoying? Every time my boss at my during the day job asks me a question, I answer "indeed"...my sister DS was saying something about dinner the other night via a text and I answered "indeed". I think and I hate to say it I may have picked up this "indeed" habit from my guy friend BN...not sure...but if I did pick it up from him, he should be ashamed of himself for introducing "indeed" into my life. I use it as a crutch. When I don't have much else to say, I just say "indeed"...when someone asks me a question I'm trying to avoid or don't know how to answer, I say "indeed"...it sounds smarter then "I dunno" or "Uh duh" or "Yeah okay" but it means the same thing. Indeed. Can the word "indeed" replace all forms of communication...is it a catch all for everything? Hmmm...my answer is "indeed". LOL!)

Anyhoooooooooooo...back to black pendant lamps. Seems that these black dome shaped lamps have caught my eye before...see this post for October 2010. Maybe it is the time of year...randomly I landed on this photo above which inspired me to do this post last week and when I did a search on the internet for black pendant lamps...my old post came up. Hmmm... Either this is a form of genius or a complete lack of creativity on my part. I'll let you be the judge. Indeed. (Oh. I forgot...I've also been using indeed as a form of punctuation or just as declaration. I use it when I am trying to be vague too.)

All this to say...here are black pendant lights in today's CHEAP TO CHIC!

Which of these dome hanging lights to you like the best? Could you see these working anywhere in your home as well? Do you like the look or just loathe it? Would be very interested to know. You know. :-)

Happy Wednesday!

P.S. Just a few days until Christmas and counting!

P.P.S. I have such nice neighbors...some have stopped by with holiday gifts (last night I got a visit from a few), they've dropped by cards and I've gone by to visit others.  I have so enjoyed the holiday spirit on my street in the Hollywood Hills.  On the way home the other night, I also stopped by friend and decorative artist Jean Horihata's house to visit with her and her husband Mark and their daughter.  Jean made me this holiday arrangement with silver leaf gilded pomegranates that she made herself!  So nice.  They are sitting in the window of my kitchen.  I am enjoying the holidays.  Everyone is in such a good mood.  I like!

Gilded pomegranate
Homemade hand gilded pomegranates in my kitchen - a gift from my friend and artist Jean Horihata. (above)

P.P.P.S.  I need to get all of my neighbor holiday gifts together and walk around and spread a little holiday cheer!

P.P.P.P.S.  I also have to do a little good this holiday season in the form of charitable giving.  Sounds cliche...but it makes me feel good to give to my charities (side bar for my two favorite right now).  All on the to-do list between now and Christmas!

P.P.P.P.P.S.  We're doing Secret Santas at the office...so stopped off at a music store last night and got that gift off my list. We also have to write a poem about our Secret Santa person.  I've gotten the same person a few times now...wondering if I can use a poem I wrote 5 years ago and just say it with a different accent or something to change it up?  I'd like to point out, I am not being lazy in just wanting to recycle a poem, I am usually the only one in the group who actually writes the poem.  One year, the person who was my Secret Santa simply wrote for their poem something like "Coco is nice.  Coco is great. Merry Christmas.".  The poems I write are several lines (I'm sure you can believe I have no problem with writing too much) and usually take up a page or more.  Oh did I mention, I am Secret Santa to my boss!
