THIS OR THAT: STRIPE VS. SOLID RUG!

Here are two photos of small European apartments. Similar in tone (brightly lit, simply furnished) but different in floor covering choice.

The first living room features a solid grey rug (in some sort of jute or natural fiber)...the one below has full on stripes (ala a famous Madeline Weinrib rug but this is probably the Ikea version) on the floor.

So the question is solid or stripe in today's THIS OR THAT!

Which do you prefer?  In this case, I think I prefer the solid, but I do LOVE pattern on area rug...

Please do weigh in.  I love hearing your thoughts on design!
