UGLY OR PRETTY?: MY THANKSGIVING FALL FLORAL CENTERPIECE!

All photos in this post by Coco of COCOCOZY
Flower arrangement with dahlia, cockscomb, green coffee beans, seeded eucalyptus, baby hydrangeas and tea leaves on a table in a backyard

So a few weeks ago, I went down to the flower mart here in Los Angeles early on Saturday morning.  I don't know why I went all the way there...I was just looking to buy a white orchid for my living room.

But as I was driving to my florist, I was talking to my sis DS on the phone and she said "So you are going to the flower mart downtown?".  I said, "No".  She said, "You should go." I said, "I'm not going there, I don't even know where it is."  She said, "8th and Wall Street, I've got to go...bye."  There I was in gym clothes (not going to the gym I might add) in my car with the knowledge of where the flower mart was located and a little spare time on my hands...so I went.

Well there are good things about the flower mart and bad things....the good things are all of the gorgeous flowers...the bad thing is all of the gorgeous flowers.  I went looking for a white orchid and came home with flowers for a fall flower arrangement all of a sudden.

Anyhooo...needless to say...I pulled an assortment of flowers and greenery and brought it home...plopped it on my deck dining table and started cutting and snipping.  I got Dahlias, Cockscomb, Baby Hydrangea, Seeded Eucalyptus, Coffee Beans, Tea Leaves...I had only ever bought hydrangea, tea leaves and coffee beans for arrangements in the past...so this was all new to me.

I haven't posted the flower arrangement for weeks only because I kind of wasn't sure whether I thought it was pretty.  That day, while I was arranging, I had texted the images to a friend and he texted something back like "Wow. Wild flowers!" I think...he couldn't figure out a word to describe them I think!

So I didn't post these pictures a few weeks back...because I am kind of thinking my impromptu fall flower arrangement might be ugly?  Maybe?

Anyhooo...maybe this post will inspire you to arrange something pretty for your Thanksgiving table centerpiece.  In the meantime, I need your thoughts - is this do-it-yourself floral fall centerpiece UGLY OR PRETTY?

UGLY OR PRETTY - WHITE CABINETS, BLACK APPLIANCES?!

kitchen with white cabinets, counter tops, walls and island but black appliances

Black kitchen appliances in an all white kitchen.

In this NYC apartment there is a fabulous gourmet black stove, hood, dishwasher and wine refrigerator...all nestled in between white cabinets, white marble counters and backsplash.

Does this work?  I like it here in this cute kitchen but I wonder whether the black appliances break up the lines in this small space?  Or do the black appliances add some texture and visual interest to an otherwise monochromatic space?

Do tell.  Would like to know...if you think this is UGLY OR PRETTY?

Happy Thursday!

Nbaynadamas ARCHIVES: UGLY OR PRETTY? HOODWINKED BY HERMES!

Lately, as I am in the midst of growing the Nbaynadamas home textiles collection, I've been thinking about marketing and sales. I got a chuckle earlier today as I was telling new Nbaynadamas sales rep JG about how I was once possibly hoodwinked into buying a questionable item at one of the most elite brands in the world...right on Rodeo drive (btw...like southerners say "I was over served" when they've drank to much alcohol; I am saying I was hoodwinked when I might have just really been impulsive...I like to say I was hoodwinked though...takes all responsibility away from me...that's right!) Hoodwinking is not a tactic we want to use for the Nbaynadamas brand and not one typically used at this major brand either at all  but thinking about this story that actually happened to me got me to laugh!

Please make sure to read the update at the bottom of the post...life is filled with ironies!

For those of you who have seen this story, I hope you'll weigh in again. The majority of you, I know haven't read it because I had a much smaller readership back then, I hope you'll weigh in now!

So today I bring you one from the Nbaynadamas archives...UGLY OR PRETTY? HOODWINKED BY HERMES!  You be the judge!

Hermes Carre en Carres scarf

This is my Hermes scarf. This is the Hermes scarf that I was duped into buying.

Here's how this became mine...

I was at the Hermes store in Beverly Hills on Rodeo Drive awhile back (August 2009)....on a mission to buy a new Hermes scarf. Thought it would be nice to have a classic silk scarf to wear as a belt with black dresses, jeans or black pants. Chic preppy. That was my goal. Black gold and white...or maybe one in that classic Hermes orange. Definitely with an equestrian feel (as I used to ride horses years ago...and love to pretend that I still have the horse woman in me by occasionally incorporating horsey things into my life). I knew what I wanted...I had a clear vision...focus...resolve.

Well, I walked into the store to buy my scarf just as that day's Birkin bag had arrived. If you haven't been to Hermes lately, in place of the renowned Birkin waiting list, Hermes has now started the clever practice of only releasing one of these $10,000+ bags a day...in a surprise daily ritual with the manager walking the bag down from a secret storage area at an unknown time. This Birkin bag "practice" creates a very bizarre in-store hysteria on a day-to-day basis with uber shoppers thronging the store in hopes of getting their hands on the leather purse of the day. The bags usually are sold within 10 minutes I was later told by one of the sales people. Only 10 minutes to sell a purse that costs over $10,000!!! That's smart...trickery....or magic...you decide?

Well, all I wanted was a scarf.

So as I was standing at the scarf counter speaking with one of the Hermes ladies...the Birkin bag arrived. I was almost shoved aside. A girl and her boyfriend, a middle aged woman who everyone seemed to know, an older husband and wife, and lady who looked like a tourist (whatever that means) were all there waiting...to see the color, to decide whether they would plunk down the $10,000. All eager, all with bated breath. It was then that I got distracted. Totally distracted (which would be much to my chagrin).

Watching this Birkin bag purchasing spectacle made me for one moment think that I needed that day's Birkin. My heart started to race. My American Express felt like it was burning a whole in my not so chic Tod's bag. If that bag was not taken, I was going to buy it. Lucky for me (and my bank account), the young girl and her boyfriend, who seemed to have been first in line, won the coveted bag that day. I didn't even have the option to purchase. What? Why not? How did these people know to even be here? How can I get one? This is not fair? Why didn't I get the memo? Why wasn't I in the know? These were all things that were running through my mind as the Birkin sailed out of the store and I was left at the war torn scarf counter.

Bewildered and bemused, I continued my hunt for the perfect silk scarf. I should have left after witnessing that Birkin whirlwind. I had lost all senses. While I had told the sales lady that I definitely and absolutely wanted a more traditional Hermes patterned scarf (you know the kind that oozes classic style), I did feel a bit like a second class citizen and was very impressionable at that point. Here were all of the ladies ready to fork over $10K and all I wanted was a measly $375 scarf (I know $375 is not cheap...I know...that's why I'm telling this story...it was crazy...craziness...but the whirlwind of the Birkin made me lose my senses I tell you. It did! Aaaarrggghhhh!!!!)

So when the sales lady said in her best French accent, "Zees eeez za scarf you must geeeet. Eeet is so very very chic....I adorrrhhhee eeet!", I looked at the scarf and thought to myself, "Really? I don't know? Is this a joke? Maybe she's right? I don't know. I think it is kind of awful. Ooops, I should never even think anything is awful in Hermes. If I do, I may never be in the Hermes know. Well, she just said many of her clients are scarf collectors and this scarf is the one to have this season. I don't know? It seems...so...so...I don't know? Maybe if I buy one of these more daring scarves, I will feel like I am in the know...like the Birkin bag shoppers. I'll have a collectors Hermes scarf. That's it yes! Forget staid traditional. I'm going daring. I'm part of the "in" scarf collectors crowd. There...yes...aha!"

The scarf she carefully unfolded in front of me is the scarf you see here. Hmmm....

The scarf features a mish mosh of colors, patterns, themes, eras, a cornucopia of flora, fauna and half of a Native American man dressed in traditional garb (notice there is only half of this man on the scarf). Oh yes, did I mention, the palm fronds, the tiger and the medieval times horses?

So the scarf is mine. I've worn it once. I've tried it on a couple of times and even as a belt it doesn't seem to work.

Now I leave it to you...is my Hermes silk scarf UGLY OR PRETTY?

Am I missing something here? I think you know where I stand on this...if you don't by now, I'll just call a spade a spade...I think it is leaning towards ugly...

Hmmm....

Hmmmm....

To tie this into home decor...maybe I can salvage this in some way. I won't ever wear it but maybe I could frame it and make it a piece of art? Hang it on a wall? Add style and panache to my home?!#$%^&... I don't think so.

If all of you see some beauty here...I'll reconsider my point of view...I'm waiting...weigh in please!

****

Important Update...I was just on the Hermes site...today 4/15/11 and I noticed that a version of my scarf (it is called Carre en Carres) is still being sold at Hermes and it is now $580...my scarf has appreciated over time! This is crazy. The scarf I've made fun of for years is actually more expensive now than it was when I bought it. I guess there was no hoodwinking going on after all...someone thinks it's pretty enough that its value has grown! Whoa! Over time, I have found uses for my scarf...I've worn it as a belt (hiding the design), a drawer liner, a keepsake...but I've still never been daring enough to actually wear it as scarf!

Was just on the phone with my good stylish friend Amie (A.Ro.) who works in the fashion industry. Years ago she said the scarf was "in" and I said not. A.Ro. is on her way to Paris and is at the airport right now. She just called and asked me why I was laughing...and I reminded her about the scarf and the story and told her the scarf has apppreciated to $580...all she said was, "I told you. That scarf was on trend. I knew it.". I guess I'm still not on trend!

Please weigh in...do you think this scarf is ugly or pretty?

Happy Friday!

UGLY OR PRETTY? A CAPIZ SHELL CHANDELIER!

 floral capiz shell drum chandelier

A floral capiz shell drum chandelier. (above)

I think this chandelier is pretty. Best of friend AM thinks this is ugly.

A capiz shell drum-shaped floral chandelier! Love it! LOVE IT!

When in NY a bit ago, shopping with friend AM...I saw this beauty. AM was off looking at some tables or something and I literally yelled, "AM come over here. AM! Come here! AM come see this GORGEOUS light fixture...it is SOOOOOO pretty." AM walked over, glanced up and said "I hate it...it's ugly." and then she walked off. Hmmmmm....

AM has fabulous taste in decor...so I only feel validated if she likes everything that I like...this time that was not the case.

What do you think dear readers? This is the question I ask you in today's UGLY OR PRETTY?...what do you think? (I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I want the popular vote in this case!). Is this chandelier ugly or pretty? You decide.

If you hate it, please say it...I can take the truth. I can take the truth. I can take the truth. I really can take the truth. I can. (I am repeating that statement so that it becomes true...).

Hope you have a great Saturday!

UGLY OR PRETTY?: WHEN METAL GARDEN PIGS FLY!

All photos in this post by Coco of Nbaynadamas
Reclaimed Metal Flying Pig from Smith and Hawken
Smith & Hawken, (310) 247-0737 - Reclaimed Metal Flying Pig, Large - on sale $207; regular $259 - (multicolor pig with wings made of scrap metal and steel from cars, rooftops and more found at salvage yard.) (above)

When pigs fly...and they are...really.

Was in Smith & Hawken in Beverly Hills the other day...ran to the store after work the day they announced they were going out of business and everything in the store was on sale. Was taking some photos of this and that...and then I came across these metal pigs...outdoor sculptures of sorts for a garden, yard, porch or deck (guess they could be used indoors too).

I immediately took a photo of the colorful sometimes rusty metal pigs. Within a flash, literally, I was "confronted" by one of the Smith & Hawken shop workers who said superciliously, "No pictures, store policy is no pictures." I responded incredulously, "Your going out of business." Still incredibily snooty, he replied, "It's store policy. No pictures. You'll have to put down the camera."

As I begrudgingly shoved my camera into my huge YSL Muse bag (why I was carrying such a huge purse I don't know) feeling like a perp who had been caught committing a serious crime, I thought to myself...isn't this ironic...the store is being closed because they can't sell stuff...and now that they are trying to sell stuff to close down, the store policy of not allowing people to take photos to post on blogs or send to their friends or loved ones to help encourage possible purchasing is contributing to the store not being able to sell stuff. Don't think I will be going back to Smith & Hawken. Plus the "sale" right now is only 20% off the original price of everything in the store...they were already having a 20% sale before the closing announcement...so it seems they are really not trying to liquidate. We'll see if things change over time.

Anyhoooooooo....had seen a few of these pigs before a few months ago, outside Bountiful Home in Venice Beach. I took pictures of them then too. I was kind of fascinated by these whimsical useless but interesting pieces.

I can't tell whether I love them or hate them. Whether they are design disasters or design delights.

I am still wondering..are they ugly or are they pretty? Can't tell...need help. What do you think?

P.S. As an aside and speaking of pigs... so, I brought my silver Harry Allen "Bank in the form of a Pig" home from the office the other day for the first time. Check out what happened when my dog met the pig and then when the piggy bank began chasing him!

UGLY OR PRETTY? A WEEKEND FURNITURE HUNT RAISES A QUESTION STILL UNANSWERED!

Photos by Coco of NbaynadamasVintage nine drawer cabinet with turned wood feet, copper nail heads and brass sheets over wood from Lawson Fenning
Lawson Fenning - Brass Sarreid Cabinet- $4400 (Made in Spain in the 1970s. Vintage nine drawer cabinet or chest of drawers with turned wood feet, copper nail heads and brass sheets over wood) (above)

NN and I were furniture hunting a few weeks ago on Beverly...well errrr...I was furniture hunting and NN was forced into it only because I was the one who drove (he suggested I pick him up...just so you understand that the events that ensued were not premeditated...no design malice intended).

That weekend, NN became my latest victim - one in a group of friends who I agree to go to lunch, dinner, or a movie with but who I trap (in a way) when I ask them to briefly stop by a store or two for a casual "look". Much to their chagrin, however, these friends unwittingly end up on the sidelines (the sidelines of my world) for hours in furniture shops while I obsessively peruse and photograph everything there is in site. Is that a form of kidnapping? Torture? Hmmm...?

Poor NN. It was Saturday and all he wanted to do was have lunch and to go see Watchmen. (Thankfully, by the time we got to the Arclight on the opening weekend of Watchmen, and much to my relief, the movie was sold out. To pretend I was just as into the movie as NN (to indulge his interest in this movie rendition of a graphic novel and only because he had been so indulgent with my interior design aside), I begged every single person at the ticket counter to release the four seats that are held aside and never sold for every movie "just in case a seat breaks or something". My begging was useless. The group of ticket sellers was resolute...they thought and said as I pretend begged, "No tickets for you."! "Fabulous", I secretly thought...but put on a very sad face to NN).

Anyhoo, before the Watchmen expedition at the Arclight, NN and I went to Lawson Fenning on Beverly. The first thing I saw was this gold cabinet. I was transfixed.

I asked NN..."Is this ugly or pretty? I can't tell."

NN definitively responded "Ugly."

"Is it really pretty? Or is it really ugly? Or maybe on a continuum it circles past ugly, around to pretty and then back to ugly and then lands somewhere in between pretty and ugly?", I mused.

NN definitively responded again, "Ugly."

Then he disappeared as I stared at the cabinet for another five minutes.

With no audience in sight, I finally replied "I'm not sure...in the right setting, although I don't know what, this might work?"

(Crickets chirp)

But, even as I spoke, I wasn't all that sure. Part of me thought beautiful...part of me thought absolutely not beautiful (verging on gauche).

I need more than NN's opinion and my indecisiveness to decide on this one.

What do you think of this vintage brass cabinet...ugly or pretty?

(I do think this is a striking and bold piece that could make an amazing design statement...but don't know just how...so what do you say?)
