This is the main reception hall at the historic Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. I was able to tour this room and many of the other 55 rooms in this very large home on Saturday during Veranda Magazine's The Great House at Historic Greystone Estate.
This is the first room you see after coming down the main staircase just beyond the mansion's Grand Hall.
At first I wasn't sure what I thought of this room...
Architecturally it was an absolute win...I knew I loved the beautiful marble floors, incredible arched leaded glass windows and doors, the high ceilings and the bright fresh white walls...a welcomed blast of fresh architecture after coming through the very grand and wood paneled entry area.
The decor at first glance was a question for me...a sea of dark rattan furniture, upholstered with bold black and white fabric, modern sconces, black side tables with black and white accessories, a shiny black grand piano and more black rattan chairs and a black gaming table...? Not sure.
On second and third glance, I liked the decor more and more. The rattan worked in this area that feels like a garden room...almost like bringing a more casual outdoor feeling furniture indoors. The gaming table and the piano make this room feel more accessible and friendly than the more formal rooms in the rest of the house. The use of black and white as far as a color scheme pays hommage and respect to the stunning floor. Good choices for a sunny and casual reception hall!
Greystone Mansion's reception hall sitting area is decorated with a dark rattan love seat, armchairs and ottomans which are all upholstered in white and black Marimekko Miami fabric. A light gold natural fiber handwoven Abaca rug from Waldo's Designs adds a natural element to the room's decor. (above)
A curved square mid century modern gaming table is paired with four dark rattan chairs with big comfy black seat pillows...providing the perfect setting for those long nights of bridge, gin, poker or in my case "go fish". Table is from Denmark 50 in Los Angeles.
The Greystone Mansion features a classically elegant black and white marble tile floor which is laid on the diagonal in a trellis pattern. Large and small black square tiles surrounded by thin white rectangle shaped marble pieces are laid together to create a pattern that looks like a garden trellis.
Large multi-paned leaded glass windows and doors take visitors from the reception hall to the Greystone Estate's main terrace or patio area (above)
