DRESSING ROOM DOORS - WEEKEND PHOTO

White walk in closet fretwork doors barcelona stools glossy paint

Oh what I wouldn't do for a dressing room with doors like these.  Fretwork carved doors in a closet.  Love! The lace-like detail lets just the right amount of light through.  Great doors.  I also like the glossy paint used on the cabinets, drawers, ceiling and walls in this walk-in closet.  Makes the small space shine.  Nice closet...right?

Happy Saturday!

Nbaynadamas DESIGN GUIDE: A WALKING DECOR TOUR OF PARIS (aka AN AUDIO VIDEO POST WITH SOME VERY RANDOM STUFF)!

A flea market on the banks of the Seine, a hotel with crystals embedded into the walls, a sneak peek inside the chic restaurant and store of Ralph Lauren and many many many random things that caught my eye along the streets in Paris.

This is today's DESIGN GUIDE!

Now before you watch, three warnings:
1. Video skills at end of the post leave much to be desired. Some of the videos are so shaky you might get motion sick...and it is hard to hear my voice. I know...same question will come up...why post this then? I know.  May I say amateur?  Amateur might best describe the whole compiliation.  Not an audio/video master piece...but hopefully slightly amusing?!?!@#

2. I am not a decorator or designer, so this is the lay persons design tour of Paris.  Have to reiterate and caveat this point for the design pros who might watch this DESIGN GUIDE and be like "What in the world?...This is all that Nbaynadamas girl found to talk about when she was in Paris...OMG...!"

3. Long...I know this too.  This is a long audio/video post.  Hopefully entertaining...or at least entertaining in a perplexing kind of way like, "Why would anyone do this?" type of way or "Why would this girl put all of these photos and videos together and post on Youtube...and then talk endlessly about them? Interesting...must watch to understand this creature."   I tried to make it short...but I can't seem to be brief. A problem. I know. I got it.  Need to practice not talking, or rambling, or chit chatting or even murmuring for a bit.  Sometimes I can tell my friends on the other end of the telephone line are stupefied by my ability to chit chat...in particular my guy friends who are at the other end of the spectrum of not chatting at all!

Okay.  So........

I hope you enjoy (or at least get through it)!

Happy Tuesday!

Flawless foyer with high gloss black front door, marble inlay floor, Greek key trim roman shades and a Benjamin Moore Palladium Blue ceiling! (above)

I know I use the word "love" a lot...but I can't help it. The word "love" so often describes my feeling for people yes of course...but also for interiors (I know...weird)! It might be over used in this type of context but I don't care...I'm compelled to employ the word "love" when I see a space, a room, a home or a piece of furniture I love! I'm going to use it again right now...so please prepare...!

LOVE this foyer!

Enough said.

Happy Friday!

THE POWER OF A PINK FRONT DOOR!

Photos: Moises Esquenazi & Associates
Pink raised panel front door at a Palm Springs home

These pictures speak for themselves I think. Retro, 1950s, Palm Springs chic, resort living, Hollywood glam all embodied in one front door! The pink goes oh so well with the white washed exterior color of the house...and I like the silver toned hardware and lantern porch lighting as well.

Photos come from interior designer/artist Moises Equenazi's website. Nicely done. Surprising and full of charm and whimsy.

WEEKEND PHOTO: BEHIND A SECRET GARDEN GATE!

So last weekend although I didn't go to Casa Kimball in the Dominican Republic in the end due to my week of "life happens"...I did end up in Palm Springs for a last minute spur of the moment mini one day vacation.

Before heading to the Indian Wells tennis tournament on Sunday, just happened upon this intriguing carved door and garden gate while roaming the grounds of the Parker Hotel.

Love the mystery of doors and love the way this one is surrounded with beautiful greenery...lush foliage in the middle of the desert I might add!

Hope you have a great weekend! I have a busy one ahead!! Very busy.

DESIGN IDEA: NAILHEAD TRIM ON CLOSET DOORS AND VANITY DRAWERS!

All photos in this post courtesy of Nickey Kehoe
Dressing room by Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe with nail head trim to make outlines of panels on the drawers and closet doors

This fab dressing room and closet is the work of talented Los Angeles interior designers Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe. Love the white built in closet cabinetry and vanity table. The coolest thing about this room though is in the detail. Nailhead trim is used to make an outline of the panels on the drawers and the closet doors. This accent on the door fronts takes this room up a level on the design side of things. Clean and simple with a touch of feminine detailing and style. LOVE IT!!!!

Think the same look could be achieved by just taking a normal paneled closet door (or interior door for that matter) and painting along the outside of raised panels.

Some other things I love about the room...love the diamond geometric shapes of the leaded glass window panes, love the way the white shag trellis rug mirrors the diamond pattern in the windows, love the retro looking chaise lounge chair, and love the stylish and diminutive writing desk perfect for penning the perfect thank you note after a great party (arrrghhhhhh...just realized I have a ton of thank you notes to write for all of the New Orleans festivities I attended...!)...overall a fantastic space!!

Have put in an email to Todd and Amy to find out if the doors are upholstered and padded. Can't tell from these photos. Will get back to you if I find out any more detail. Thank you Todd and Amy for more great design!

What do you think of this design idea?

SEE THIS HOUSE: THE LIGHT IS JUST RIGHT IN A SUBLIME NETHERLANDS HOME!

This is the Netherlands home, showroom and studio of lighting guru and designer Ron van Empel of Empel Collections. A wonderful live/work space!

Came across these images because friend CB forwarded me a bunch of pictures Ron had emailed her. Ron is great friends with CB's godmother and I guess sends CB emails from time to time. This time CB and I were talking on the phone and she began raving about how "gorgeous" Ron's Leiden home is. I was immediately interested in seeing the gorgeous photos...so Charlotte sent them over...that's when I began drooling. I drooled even more when Ron sent me another email with more photos from his home and some of his new lighting. Eureka! A post! (Meanwhile...I know...very long explanation to really say somehow I got the photos...sorry...)

I love this home that Ron uses as a place of residence, a design studio and a showroom for all of his lighting (table lamps, chandeliers, sconces, wall lamps, pendant lights). From a design perspective, these interiors are so very well decorated but also very accessible - meaning they are pretty and livable at the same time.

Thank you Ron for sharing!

SMART DESIGN: GOOD STYLE SLIDES INTO PERFECT FUNCTION WITH INTERIOR BARN DOORS!

Red interior barn door slides on black metal exposed hardware leading to a kitchen by Bestor Architecture
Photo/design courtesy of Bestor Architecture
A red interior barn door slides on black metal exposed hardware over a large doorway separating the kitchen. (above)

I had to post the picture above because I love this style door. I know most of you who are "in the design know" are going to be thinking, "Oh, I can't believe her. A story about interior sliding barn doors. That has so been done before. This Coco is not at all original or innovative." Well to you people who are "in the design know" this story may have been done before...but never by me! LOL! So, here goes! :-)

Love the idea of a sliding interior door that is hung barn door style. These sliding doors or sliding door panels provide a solution to problematic doorways or, in my case, problematic rooms. If your doorway is too big, or your room is too small, or if there is no room for a regular standard door to swing open, or if your wall won't accommodate a pocket door due to electrical wiring or a stud, these interior sliding barn doors could do the trick.

You can actually hang any style door made out of almost any material (wood, glass, metal, plexiglass, polycarbonate etc.) like this by using the right hardware. The interior barn door hardware is engineered to allow the door to slide across a track or rod that is hung above the a door jamb. Voila.

Love what Los Angeles based Bestor Architecture did with the design of this bright red door featured above - a very literal but stylishly modern approach to the barn door concept.

Below, is a door inside my house. My door was not "designed" like the one above...it was "improvised" by me, Coco. Improvised out of desperation. A few years back during a remodel, I bought a regular raised panel door that I was planning to have installed as a pocket door in my tiny "den" (a room that is only 8'x11'). I wanted to save space in this room that is literally the size of a walk-in closet...a regular door would just get in the way, but I knew I pocket door would definitely absolutely positively work. Wrong. How wrong I was!

When the trim carpenter, Alfredo, arrived at my home towards the end of my mini-renovation, he told me all of the reasons why I couldn't install a pocket door in my tiny tiny den in my tiny tiny house. "What? I can't install a pocket door? That was my plan! What? Uh...what?", I said. I could feel all of my systems shutting down. All I heard him say was, "Waaa waaa waaa electrical. Waaa waa waa supporting wall. Waa waa stud. Waaaa waaa waaaa not enough room to install the pocket door system ...waaaa waaaa." It was an audio blur at the time...I was at my ropes end with my project that had been going on for two months (I know...two months isn't that long...so much for my patience, right?). As everything around me started to spin and I as my hearing faded and as my limbs grew numb (think these could be symptoms of remodeling stress), I said calmly but frantically to the trim carpenter, Alfredo, "I don't know what to do. This is not right. This is NOT part of the plan. Well can't you do something? Anything? Oh my gosh. Okay. Okay. Can't you just tear down the wall and start over (he stared at me like I was crazy at this point) or put the pocket door on the outside and then do something to cover the top?" A light bulb went off over Alfredo's head at the last suggestion. It was at that point he said he would create my cottage style barn door for my den. Phew. Total meltdown averted and now I have a door that takes up little or no space and allows me to enjoy my walk-in closet size den every day! Still works some two years later...perfect (the door is perfect...not the den...the den is still too small)!

An interior barn door in the tiny den in my very very tiny home in the Hollywood Hills (above)

P.S. I opted not to spend a ton of money on the more expensive and more beautiful exposed barn door hardware (thousands of dollars in some cases just for the hardware). Instead I had Alfredo, the trim carpenter, build a box valance of sorts to hide the cheaper not so pretty hardware. Again, it does the trick.

P.P.S. The walls in my den are not yellow. For some reason the color in this photo is off. The walls are actually this great Ralph Lauren tan linen color (forgot what it is called). I'm sure you don't care about this post script!

Anyhoooo....I think these barn doors are very SMART DESIGN. What do you think?
